EdgeConneX Builds 350MW Data Center Platform in Greater Osaka

EdgeConneX has accelerated its expansion in Japan with the acquisition of a second data center site in the Greater Osaka and Yawata areas, creating a 350MW data center platform in one of Asia’s fastest-growing digital markets. The new site will add 150MW of capacity to the 200MW project announced in January, underscoring the company’s strategy of rapid, large-scale deployment in regions where demand for Cloud and AI infrastructure is surging.

The milestone was marked on August 7 with a signing ceremony alongside Keihan Real Estate, the landowner and part of the Keihan Group, a diversified enterprise with roots in Japan’s century-old railway industry. The partnership reflects the growing role of real estate and infrastructure developers in enabling Japan’s data economy.

EdgeConneX first entered the Japanese market in early 2025 with plans for a 200MW facility set to begin construction in 2026 and open its first phase in late 2027. Now, just six months later, the operator has doubled down, securing another 150MW site that cements its long-term commitment to the region. Together, the two facilities represent one of the largest data center footprints in the Kansai area, aligning with Japan’s national strategy to develop a “Digital Garden City Nation” with world-class IT infrastructure.

Company executives stressed that these projects are not only about scale but also about building infrastructure designed for AI and high-density computing. With EdgeConneX’s Ingenuity product suite, the Osaka facilities will support workloads surpassing 600 kW per rack, optimized for the latest generation of GPUs and CPUs from NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel. This capacity directly addresses the wave of AI adoption reshaping industries across Japan and the broader Asia-Pacific region.

“We are thrilled to see our vision for Japan taking shape so quickly, with substantial milestones already achieved,” said Masahiko Inoue, Head of Japan for EdgeConneX. “With these two facilities, we aim not only to address the increasing need for advanced IT infrastructure but also to solidify Japan’s position as a global leader in Cloud and AI technologies.”

Carbon, Waste, and Water Neutrality by 2030

Sustainability is a cornerstone of EdgeConneX’s growth strategy. The company has pledged to reach carbon, waste, and water neutrality by 2030, with current operations powered entirely by renewable energy. Its performance has earned recognition in Structure Research’s State of Environmental Impact reports, where it ranked first in efficiency and transparency for two consecutive years.

Sam Lee, Managing Director for Market & Commercial Development at EdgeConneX, highlighted both the scale and the sustainability of the projects: “Our rapid expansion in Japan signifies our commitment to supporting the country’s digital transformation. By blending world-class technology, sustainability, and innovation, EdgeConneX is uniquely positioned to meet the demands of a power-constrained and high-growth market like Japan.”

The strategic importance of Greater Osaka cannot be overstated. The region benefits from robust power infrastructure and serves as a commercial and industrial hub that complements Tokyo’s position as Japan’s primary data center market. By anchoring operations here, EdgeConneX ensures hyperscalers, enterprises, and AI providers have access to scalable, resilient, and low-latency infrastructure.

With 350MW of capacity now secured and designed for the most demanding workloads, EdgeConneX is positioning itself as a pivotal player in Japan’s digital transformation, meeting the needs of an economy increasingly defined by Cloud adoption and AI deployment. The company’s rapid progress signals both its ambition and the accelerating momentum of Japan’s data center market.
