Cloud-native monitoring and security platform Datadog has acquired data observability startup Metaplane as it deepens its investment in full-stack visibility across applications and data infrastructure. While the financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, the acquisition marks a significant step in Datadog’s expansion into the data observability space.
It would reinforce Datadog’s role in supporting enterprise data operations alongside application performance and security monitoring.
Metaplane offers an end-to-end data observability platform that provides advanced monitoring capabilities, including column-level lineage and machine learning-powered anomaly detection. Its tools are designed to detect, prevent, and resolve data quality issues across the entire data lifecycle – not just once data lands in a warehouse or data lake, but from source through transformation to consumption. This holistic approach has become increasingly important as businesses build more AI-powered applications and rely on modern data stacks powered by platforms like Snowflake and Databricks.
By integrating Metaplane’s capabilities, Datadog would strengthen its existing product suite, which already includes Data Jobs Monitoring and Data Streams Monitoring. The acquisition addresses a growing need for organizations to establish trust in their data as they scale operations and adopt more complex data-driven workflows.
Observability Shifting to Data Teams
Traditional observability solutions have typically catered to developers and IT operations teams, but the rapid rise of AI and real-time analytics has shifted some of that responsibility to data teams. These teams would now need more advanced tools to maintain data reliability and system integrity throughout the lifecycle of modern applications.
“Observability is no longer just for developers and IT teams; it’s now an essential part of data teams’ day-to-day responsibilities as they manage increasingly complex and business-critical workflows,” said Michael Whetten, Vice President of Product at Datadog. He noted that integrating data and application observability will be critical to helping enterprises build dependable AI systems.
Metaplane CEO and co-founder Kevin Hu echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the opportunity to extend Metaplane’s reach. “Our goal is to assist businesses in establishing confidence in the data that drives their operations. Partnering with Datadog allows us to make data observable to tens of thousands more businesses, while bridging the gap between data and software teams.”
Metaplane will continue to serve existing customers under the new brand, ‘Metaplane by Datadog,’ and will support new deployments as it scales within Datadog’s global ecosystem.
