Equinix has launched its first International Business Exchange (IBX) data center in Jakarta, marking its entry into Indonesia’s digital infrastructure market. The new facility, dubbed JK1, is part of a joint venture with PT Astra International Tbk, a major Indonesian conglomerate. The launch would reflect Equinix’s commitment to expanding its Asia-Pacific footprint and leveraging Indonesia’s fast-growing digital economy, which is projected to reach US$130 billion by 2025.

Strategically located in Jakarta’s Central Business District and adjacent to key internet exchanges, JK1 offers access to over 50 local and international network service providers. It enables Indonesian enterprises and multinationals to build secure, scalable digital ecosystems, supporting advanced technologies like artificial intelligence and cloud computing. The facility is designed to meet the needs of companies seeking high-performance infrastructure and reliable connectivity, including those targeting regional and global markets.

Government officials have welcomed the investment. Meutya Hafid, Indonesia’s Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, described Equinix JK1 as a gateway for international tech companies and startups to deepen their presence in the country. The data center is expected to enhance local capacity and foster partnerships across the private sector, including with small and medium-sized enterprises.

Ricky Kusmayadi, Deputy Minister for Investment Information Technology, also emphasized JK1’s role in reinforcing Indonesia’s position as a digital hub. He noted the government’s interest in attracting further foreign investment in the data center sector, especially from stakeholders committed to building a resilient and diverse digital infrastructure.

Sustainability and AI-readiness

From Equinix’s perspective, Indonesia is a priority market. Cyrus Adaggra, President of Asia-Pacific at Equinix, noted the strong customer demand at launch and affirmed the company’s long-term commitment to Southeast Asia. Haris Izmee, Managing Director of Equinix Indonesia, added that rapid cloud adoption and the country’s dominant e-commerce sector – expected to be worth US$120 billion by 2025 – have created a growing need for high-performance data services.

Equinix JK1 is engineered with sustainability and AI-readiness in mind. The eight-story facility will ultimately provide 1,600 cabinets and 5,300 square meters of colocation space. It supports advanced cooling techniques, including liquid cooling, to manage high-density workloads. The design targets a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.41, aligning with global efficiency standards from ASHRAE. Equinix has also acquired renewable energy credits to fully offset the data center’s electricity use with green energy.

Astra’s Director, Santosa, said the collaboration with Equinix merges digital infrastructure expertise with deep local market knowledge. He underscored the companies’ shared goal of broadening access to digital services across Indonesia without time or location constraints.

Globally, Equinix now operates 270 data centers across 75 metropolitan areas in 35 countries. The company has 60 data centers in the Asia-Pacific region alone, with expansion plans underway in Thailand and the Philippines.
